Saltwater flooding of Lakes a disaster, not a strategy

Media Release | Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young
Friday 14th November 2008, 4:25pm

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the agreement by state and federal water ministers today to flood the Murray’s lower lakes with seawater in a worst-case scenario of low rainfall is an environmentally, socially and economically disastrous option that should not be considered.

Senator Hanson-Young said there were better options than saltwater flooding that could be taken to rescue the Lower Lakes.

“The water ministers today agreed upon saltwater flooding as the ‘strategy’ to fix the situation in the Lower Lakes – but it’s not a ‘strategy’, it’s an irreversible environmental disaster waiting to happen,” she said.

Second Reading Speech: The Family Law Amendment (De Facto Financial Matters and Other Measures) Bill 2008

Speech | Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young
Tuesday 14th October 2008, 9:00pm

I rise in support of the Family Law Amendment De Facto Financial Matters and Other Measures) Bill 2008.

As the first stage of the Rudd’s Government’s election promise to remove discrimination against same-sex couples in more than 100 pieces of legislation, the De Facto Financial Bill was referred to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee along with the Same-Sex Relationship (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws-Superannuation) Bill 2008 and the Evidence Amendment Bill 2008.

The Family Law Amendment (De Facto Financial Matters and Other Measures) Bill 2008 amends the Family Law Act 1975 to provide for opposite-sex and same-sex de facto couples to access the federal family law courts on property and maintenance matters.

The main benefit of the legal changes essentially allows de facto couples can access the Family Court rather than the more expensive and time consuming state supreme courts. The Bill also amends financial agreements between married couples and superannuation splitting, as well as providing for certificates in relation to family dispute resolution.

Speech | Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young
Tuesday 14th October 2008, 9:00pm

I rise to speak to the Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws – Superannuation) Bill 2008.

The Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws – Superannuation) Bill 2008, seeks to amend the eliminate discrimination against same-sex couples and the children of same-sex relationships in Commonwealth legislation that provide for reversionary superannuation benefits upon the death of a scheme member, and in related taxation treatment of superannuation benefits.

The Greens support the removal of discrimination in all areas of federal law, and we do not want to see the Same-Sex Relationship (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws-Superannuation) Bill 2008 delayed any further. The public have expressed their desire to have same-sex discrimination removed from law, and we need to see this discrimination removed expediently.

Australia's iconic Coorong wetlands and the Murray River's Lower Lakes can be saved from collapse - according to a minority Senate report released today.

Australian Greens Senators Rachel Siewert (WA) and Sarah Hanson-Young (SA) today released a minority Senate report, with Senator Nick Xenophon (SA).

The report finds that, contrary to the Federal Government's pessimistic view, a total of 60 gigalitres of fresh water by September next year is all that's required to provide enough environmental flow to stop Lakes Alexandrina and Albert from drying up and acidifying in the short term.

Adelaide Advertiser: Land of Storm Boy must not be sacrificed

Opinion Editorial | Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young

Minister for Water Penny Wong says there are no easy options, only hard choices when it comes to the crisis currently facing South Australia’s Storm Boy country.

But one of the options tabled by the Minister’s own Department in a submission to the ongoing Senate Inquiry I established into Water Management in the Lower Lakes and Coorong could carry with it costs too heavy to bear.

No further delay on same-sex reform: Greens

Media Release | Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young
Monday 22nd September 2008, 1:20pm

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on the Federal Parliament to pass a package of bills to remove discrimination against same-sex couples without further delay.

The Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws – General Law Reform) Bill 2008 (also known as the Omnibus Bill) amends 68 Commonwealth laws, covering 19 government departments, in order to remove discrimination against same-sex couples, their families, and their children.

“The passing of this Bill is long overdue, given that it’s nearly two whole decades since ‘sexual preference’ was added as an additional ground for discrimination under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s Regulations,” said Senator Hanson-Young.
